Children, Headache, Headaches, Migraine, MigrainesMany people do not realize that children can also get migraines. Pediatric neurologists state that having migraines as a child happens more often than people are aware of. 5% of children under 10 years of age have them. 10% suffer from them after age 10.

A well-known case is that of 12-year-old Jacob Holladay. Because his migraines were so intense, he was taken to Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles, California. He said that the pain came from both sides of his temple, but it was worse on the left side. He was unable to attend school for a week. This was the 3rd week he had missed due to unbearable migraines.

Kids with migraines will often grow up and continue to have them in their adult years. Experts agree that it is vital to learn to control them as soon as they begin. However, there is no drug approved by the FDA to treat migraine headaches in children. So, what can be done?

Understanding Why It’s Happening

It is important to understand what may be the root cause of migraines in children. It is often an over-looked problem. It has to do with the flow of cerebral spinal fluid and cerebral blood to and from the brain. If this flow becomes hindered, it can be a cause for a migraine headache in children and adults. What hinders this process from functioning properly?

If a misalignment is found in the upper neck, specifically the top two vertebrae in the neck, it can be placing undue pressure on the brainstem. This hinders the flow of fluids to and from the brain. These misalignments need to be corrected. The best person to do that is an upper cervical chiropractor, such as Dr. Andrea Pritchett of Dublin, California. She uses a very gentle technique that causes no pain or discomfort in children. There is no popping or twisting of the spine. Once the misalignment is detected and corrected, healing can begin and hopefully the child will see a huge decrease in symptoms of migraines. In some cases, they have gone away entirely.
