Autism, Prenatal Care

Autism is characterized by a child having problems interpreting and interacting with his or her environment. Studies suggest that certain genes trigger ASD, and they are more likely to be triggered during the 10th and 24th week of pregnancy. They can also be triggered after the child is born up until age 6.

However, as well as genetic influences, there are also environmental risk factors that can cause problems associated with ASD. One of these factors is the stress level of the expectant mother.

Heightened stress can be caused by a mother having an infection during her second or third trimester, which can hinder the development of the brain of the unborn baby. The result of this is that if a mom-to-be becomes ill during the 10th and 24th weeks of pregnancy and her stress levels rise, this allows the ASD genes in the fetus to be more likely to be triggered.

For this reason, it’s vital that expectant moms remain as healthy as possible throughout their pregnancies and ensure their immune systems are functioning at optimal levels. Our immune systems can be compromised if there are problems with the brainstem and central nervous system, which can be caused by neck or upper back injuries.

For this reason, some moms-to-be who have experienced neck or back problems choose to visit an upper cervical chiropractor to check the top two vertebrae in their spines ensuring proper alignment.

If these bones have moved out of their correct positions, they can put pressure on the brainstem which can prevent the body and brain communicating properly, and this can affect the nervous system, and ultimately the immune system.

Upper cervical chiropractors are specially trained to detect and correct these misalignments. I encourage expectant mothers to see me at Vital Life Wellness Center as a part of your prenatal care.
