What is TMJ?
The letters TMJ stand for temporomandibular joint disorder. This is a combination of symptoms that include tenderness and pain in the muscles that we use to chew. Also, there is pain in the jaw joint, known as the temporomandibular joint, and many other spots along the neck and head.
A person experiencing TMJ frequently has a history of stress and difficulty sleeping. The pain is generally more severe in the morning. When the jaw moves, it can be accompanied by catching, popping, clicking, and grinding. This can lead to deviated or restricted motion when opening or closing the mouth.
Dentist and orthodontists usually are sought out for relief care. Such professionals provide help by trying to change the person’s bite. When seeking a medical doctor’s advice, they suggest relieving TMJ with drugs or surgery.
What Really Works?
The Upper Cervical Research Foundation has done some exciting new research that shows a dramatic improvement in patients with TMJ. This is accomplished by using a natural approach, with no drugs or surgery involved. In this particular study, patients that presented with jaw pain or temporomandibular joint disorder were sent for an upper cervical evaluation. They received care over an eight week period, and all were happy to report a dramatic improvement in their symptoms of TMJ.
Using the 0-10 pain scale (10 being the worst pain imaginable), the average jaw pain before relief care fell at right around 5.9. After the eight weeks of upper cervical care, the average dropped as low as 0.9. This was a huge improvement! There have been many tests done over the years that show a definite connection between the upper neck area and jaw pain.
