Imagine yourself being forcefully removed from a warm place where you have been floating for nine months.  Suddenly, you find yourself either pushed through a small opening, putting intense pressure on your head and entire body, or pulled out of an incision in the womb, not having adequate tactile stimulus to adapt to the new environment.  You may have been pulled out of that narrow opening with the help of forceps or had your head twisted to enable you to fit through the pelvis.

Regardless of whether the birth was natural or had interventions, the trauma of the experience was absorbed by the nervous system of the baby, perhaps causing a misalignment of the spine, and therefore affecting the growth and development of the baby for his or her entire life – or until the spine is corrected. There may also have been pressure on the baby’s spine in-utero, if there wasn’t enough room for the growing child, therefore misaligning the spine before birth!

You have two choices regarding your baby’s spine.

  1. You can assume that everything is fine and do nothing for the structural integrity of the baby, or:
  2. You can have your baby’s nervous system checked, preferably soon after birth, but as soon as possible after you read this.

Keep in mind, children respond very quickly to NUCCA or other chiropractic care.  They hold their alignment remarkably well, so the earlier you have them checked, the faster they can get on the road to recovery, or begin to grow straighter and stronger.  They will not need to be adjusted very often, once their spine stabilizes.

What does checking a baby’s spine look like?

It’s extremely gentle and non-invasive.  The mother (or father) will be present the whole time.  Babies often really enjoy getting their spines checked and relax nicely after the adjustment.

What are some symptoms that may indicate a baby’s misaligned spine?

  • Chronic ear infections
  • Keeping head turned one direction instead of equally to both sides
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Colic
  • Fussy baby
  • Difficulty nursing on both breasts
  • Lethargy
